Do - A Photo Exhibition

Do was an exhibition of photographs by Martin Maybank celebrating volunteers.

Do was exhibited at Leeds City Library 8-30 November 2010.

"Do is a project about the volunteers of Leeds and the many causes that they give their time to. While doing this project I have had the chance to talk to and photograph so many interesting people from all over Leeds, young to old and from every part of our society. These people all have one thing in common; they give their own time up for the benefit of others and the city of Leeds. I would like to thank everyone who took part in this project for sharing their unique stories with me and allowing me to photograph them."

Sally informed us of Mind, body and Soul and that childcare is arranged.

Gardening and working as a team. Having a fun time whilst gardening and learning a new skill.

Can you say more about the organisation that you volunteer for, where are they based and what are they involved in doing?
Mind, Body and Soul has been fantastic and I really enjoy volunteering in the Gipton Community Gardens.

Why do you think that more should people
should get involved in voluntary work?

Better communication of what you can volunteer for and if childcare is available.

Finally, is there anything else that you would like to share about your volunteering experiences in Leeds?
I would like to get involved in more volunteer work, as it is very rewarding.

What made you decide to become involved in volunteering?
I enjoy working with little kids and building relationships with the other volunteers.

What steps did you take to start volunteering, was there anyone in particular that helped you find the organisation that you now give up your time for?
Stacey and Carlee, our extended activities teachers, put up an advertisement with different activities, and I thought it would be ideal.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of volunteering for you?
We were awarded certificates in the school assembly, which looks brilliant. Also doing it with your friends makes it worth it.

Young Leaders is based at Carr Manor High School, we work with young kids doing different activitiessuch as crafts, giving them something to do during the holidays.

Why do you think that more should people should get involved in voluntary work?
It is great meeting new people learning different activities. A great way to spend your holiday.

"I got involved in volunteering down here completely by accident, I just found the scheme going and turned up a few months ago the poly tunnel wasn't being used and the garden wasn't planted. I've always been interested in gardening, well growing and eating mainly, growing to eat. Most of the stuff I grow is edible although up in the top garden I've got some feely touchy plants like ferns and grasses and stuff like that but intermingled I've got stuff like lettuce radishes all mixed up. Last Monday we made a salad out of the garden. It's just good to get outside and meet people."
